Prototype Development

Turn an uncertain hardware or connected-product idea into something you can test, demonstrate and learn from. Dizzy Squirrel designs and develops prototype electronics and PCBs, proof-of-concept hardware and app-connected devices. Native apps, web interfaces, APIs and backend services can be included where they help prove the complete product. The scope is shaped around the question the prototype needs to answer.

Prototype the uncertainty, not the finished appearance

The most useful prototype is the one that changes what you know. It may prove that a circuit, sensor or power design behaves as expected, show that a prototype PCB can be assembled and brought up successfully, confirm that Bluetooth or Wi-Fi remains reliable in the intended environment, or demonstrate that the electronics and mobile app can work together as a believable end-to-end product. APIs and backend services can be added where they are part of that path.

That means prototype development should begin with the risk or decision, not with a fixed list of screens or components. We identify what would be most expensive to discover late, then build enough of the real product path to create useful evidence before a larger development or manufacturing commitment is made.

What can be included in a prototype?

A prototype can be a circuit, a custom PCB, an assembled proof-of-concept device or a complete app-connected product. The right mix depends on the assumption being tested. Typical engagements may include:

  • Prototype electronics using development boards or custom PCBs
  • Schematic capture, PCB layout and component selection for proof-of-concept builds
  • Sensor, actuator, power, control and communication interfaces
  • Bluetooth Low Energy or Wi-Fi communication between app and device
  • Native iOS or Android proof-of-concept applications where needed to exercise the hardware
  • Temporary APIs or backend services where they are needed to prove the complete data flow
  • Third-party service integration where external systems are part of the technical risk
  • Working demonstrators for internal stakeholders, investors, partners or controlled user testing

Different prototype types answer different questions

Technical proof of concept

Used when one integration, protocol, sensor, platform capability or performance assumption could determine whether the wider plan is viable.

Functional product prototype

Combines several parts of the real product so a representative user journey can be tested from beginning to end.

Demonstrator

Prioritises a convincing, controlled end-to-end demonstration for stakeholders or partners while making clear which parts are prototype engineering rather than production-ready implementation.

Integration prototype

Connects an existing app, device, API or third-party platform to prove that the interfaces and data model will work before a production integration is commissioned.

User-experience prototype

Focuses on the flow, language and interaction needed to validate whether users can understand a new product before the full engineering effort is committed.

Our prototype-development process

1. Define the decision

We start by identifying what the prototype must prove and what would change if the result is negative. That keeps the work focused on useful evidence rather than unnecessary polish.

2. Choose the minimum believable system

We decide which parts need to be real, which can be simulated and which can use temporary infrastructure. A development board, temporary API or simple administrative interface may be entirely appropriate if it proves the right behaviour.

3. Build and test the difficult path

We develop the prototype around the critical workflow, including failure and recovery conditions where they materially affect the product decision.

4. Capture what was learned

The output is not only a demonstration. We document the important findings, limitations and implications for the next stage so the prototype becomes a useful engineering asset rather than a disconnected experiment.

What happens after the prototype?

A successful prototype does not automatically become production code or production hardware. Sometimes that is appropriate; sometimes the prototype has deliberately used temporary shortcuts because learning quickly was more valuable than building the final architecture at the first attempt.

We make that distinction explicit. At the end of a prototype phase we can help translate the findings into a production plan covering the app, backend, electronics, integrations or web systems that genuinely need to be engineered for launch.
