EADS – Bringing a Decade of Historical Research Online
Turning a complex historical dataset into an accessible digital resource
EADS – the Eighth Air Force Data Set – is an ambitious historical research project documenting the heavy bomber operations of the USAAF Eighth Air Force during the Second World War.
Built from primary sources and refined over more than a decade of research, the project brings together hundreds of thousands of individual records covering missions, units, aircraft, targets and operational activity.
Our role was to build and launch eads.info, creating a professional digital home for that research and making an exceptionally detailed body of historical information accessible to a much wider audience.
The result is a focused, content-led WordPress platform that gives researchers, historians, enthusiasts and families a clear way to discover the project, access the underlying data and follow its continued development.

The Challenge
Making a complex research project easy to understand
EADS isn’t a conventional content website.
Behind it sits an extensive dataset created through approximately 30,000 hours of research, spanning around 400,000 historical records and 3,900 missions.
The website therefore needed to do more than simply introduce the project. It had to communicate the scale and credibility of the research without overwhelming visitors, while providing straightforward routes into the data itself.
It also needed to accommodate a project that is still evolving. New findings, corrections, research notes and supporting articles will continue to be added over time, so the platform had to work just as effectively as an ongoing publishing tool as it did at launch.
Our Approach
A digital experience built around the research
We developed the website around a simple principle: the research should remain the focus.
Rather than allowing the scale of the underlying information to dictate a complicated interface, we created a clear hierarchy that introduces EADS, establishes the significance of the archive and progressively gives visitors ways to explore further.
The visual treatment draws on the historical subject matter while maintaining the clarity expected from a modern research resource. Strong typography, archive imagery and carefully structured content give the site its own identity without competing with the material it exists to present.
The result balances two very different requirements: the authority of a serious historical research project and the accessibility of a modern website.
Making the Data Accessible
One of the most important objectives was to create a direct route between the website and the research itself.
Visitors can quickly understand what the EADS dataset contains, see the scale of the project and download the latest version of the spreadsheet directly from the website.
This keeps the experience practical. The site is not simply a showcase for the project – it acts as the public gateway to the resource.
That distinction was important. EADS was created to enable data-driven research into questions that can be difficult or impossible to answer from fragmented historical sources. The website needed to support that objective rather than placing unnecessary barriers between the visitor and the information.
Built to Keep Developing
EADS is an active research project rather than a finished archive, so maintainability was an important part of the development approach.
Built on WordPress, the website provides a flexible content platform through which the project can publish news, research updates and supporting articles alongside the core dataset.
This gives EADS room to grow without requiring the underlying website to be rebuilt whenever new material becomes available.
Key elements of the build include:
- A purpose-built WordPress website for the EADS project
- Clear presentation of a large and technically detailed historical dataset
- Direct access to the latest downloadable EADS spreadsheet
- Dedicated news and research content areas
- Archive imagery integrated throughout the visual experience
- A structured content hierarchy designed for different audiences and levels of subject knowledge
- A maintainable publishing platform that can evolve alongside the research
- A complete production launch at eads.info
The Result
A permanent digital home for an extraordinary research project
The finished website turns more than a decade of specialist research into a coherent public-facing resource.
Instead of encountering the EADS project solely as a large spreadsheet, visitors now have context: what the dataset is, why it was created, what makes the research valuable and how it can be used.
For experienced researchers, there is a direct route to the data. For visitors discovering EADS for the first time, the website provides an accessible introduction to both the project and the history behind it. And for the project itself, there is now a platform through which new research and discoveries can continue to be published.

From Dataset to Digital Platform
EADS demonstrates what happens when specialist knowledge is paired with thoughtful digital development.
The challenge wasn’t simply to put a large collection of historical information online. It was to give that information structure, context and a credible digital presence – while ensuring the technology remained straightforward enough for the resource to continue developing for years to come.
The result is eads.info: a dedicated digital platform for exploring, understanding and continuing the story behind the Eighth Air Force Data Set.
