Turning movement on the training pitch into actionable performance data
Coach Board is a prototype connected hardware and software platform designed to help football coaches capture, understand and review player movement during training sessions.
By combining wearable tracking devices, a custom pitch-side hardware hub and a cloud-based analytics platform, Coach Board transforms raw positional data into a detailed record of how players and teams move, allowing coaches to analyse a session once training is complete.

The challenge
Modern football coaching depends increasingly on data, but capturing meaningful positional information during training presents a significant technical challenge.
A useful system needs to track multiple players simultaneously and accurately enough to reveal more than simple distance travelled. It needs to show positioning, movement patterns, intensity and the relationship between players throughout a session.
At the same time, the technology has to stay out of the way. Players should be able to train normally while coaches focus on the session rather than managing complicated equipment.
The challenge behind Coach Board was therefore to create an end-to-end system capable of capturing high-precision player movement, reliably transferring large volumes of data and presenting it in a form that coaches can use.
The solution
Coach Board was developed as a connected ecosystem rather than a standalone app.
Each player wears a compact Bluetooth and GPS-enabled tracking device capable of capturing positional data with centimetre-level precision. Throughout the session, the devices record each player’s movement and communicate with a dedicated central hardware hub positioned pitch-side.
The hub acts as the bridge between the players and the wider Coach Board platform. Data from every active tracker is collected, synchronised and aggregated locally before being transferred to a secure cloud-based data service.
This creates a single, time-aligned dataset representing the movement of the entire squad.
Once a session has finished, coaches can use the Coach Board application to review what happened on the pitch and explore individual and team performance in detail.
From player to platform
The system was designed around a clear data journey:
Player → Wearable tracker → Pitch-side hub → Cloud platform → Coach Board app
The wearable captures precise movement data without interfering with training.
The custom hub receives information from multiple players simultaneously, providing a reliable central point for collecting and processing the session.
The cloud platform stores the resulting dataset and makes it available for analysis across devices.
Finally, Coach Board turns that information into an accessible visual representation of the training session, allowing coaches to move from raw coordinates to useful sporting insight.
Designing the hardware and software together
One of the key aspects of the prototype was treating the physical and digital products as one experience.
The wearable devices had to be compact and unobtrusive while maintaining the connectivity and positioning performance required on the pitch. The central hub needed to manage multiple simultaneous data streams reliably in an environment where connectivity cannot always be taken for granted.
At the software level, the challenge shifted from collecting data to making sense of it.
Thousands of positional data points only become valuable when they can answer practical coaching questions: Where was a player at a particular moment? How did the shape of the team change? How much space existed between units? How intensely did an individual move throughout a drill?
Coach Board was designed to make those questions easier to investigate.
Making sessions replayable
Rather than reducing a training session to a handful of statistics, Coach Board creates a digital record of movement across the pitch.
Coaches can revisit a session after training, inspect individual player trajectories and analyse how the team behaved as a group. Positional data can be synchronised over time, creating the foundation for replaying drills and examining key moments from a tactical perspective.
The same dataset can also support performance metrics such as:
- Distance covered
- Player speed and acceleration
- High-intensity running
- Positional heat maps
- Player trajectories
- Team shape and spacing
- Movement within defined areas
- Comparisons between players or sessions
This gives coaching staff both a high-level view of physical output and the ability to investigate the detail behind it.
The prototype
Coach Board demonstrates how wearable technology, custom electronics, wireless communication, cloud infrastructure and application design can work together as a single product.
The prototype established the core architecture required to capture high-resolution data from multiple players, aggregate it at the edge and make it available for subsequent analysis in the cloud.
More importantly, it explored how a technically complex tracking system could be translated into a simple proposition for coaching staff:
Train as normal. Capture every movement. Analyse what happened afterwards.
The opportunity
Coach Board provides a foundation for much more than session tracking.
With a consistent stream of precise positional data, future development could support automated tactical analysis, comparisons across multiple training sessions, workload monitoring, live coaching tools and machine-learning models capable of identifying patterns that are difficult to see from observation alone.
The result is a prototype that connects what happens on the pitch with what happens in the analysis room — giving coaches a new way to see, measure and understand performance.
